Good farmers

In the first Viet Nam Rice Festival, the three farmers, who are from Hau Giang, of 50 representative farmers in the whole country has been awarded “Creative farmer” honor certificate by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Their creation has been contributed positively to the national agricultural production.

* Head of seed rice club

Mr. Lam Ngoc Quang (Bay Qui)

Mr. Lam Ngoc Quang (Bay Qui), residing in hamlet 01, Vi Dong commune, Vi Thuy district has constantly studied to find out the farming process of high quality rice strains which are suitable with the local soil, including growth time, pest and disease resistance, alum soil adaptation, and high rice quality meeting export standards. By his experience, he has shown more than 1,000 farmers on purchasing and exchanging rice strains as well as rice producing techniques wholeheartly. Being the head of seed rice producing club in hamlet 01, from 2000 to present, Mr. Bay Qui has shown the club members to produce approximately 3,000 tons of seed rice confirmed, 75 tons of clean-bred rice for supplying to the market. For him, he has produced 120 tons of seed rice confirmed and 3 tons of clean-bred rice, which help the local set of rice strains improved and the provincial farmers’ rate of using confirmed rice strains increased. Mr. Bay Qui told: “18 rice strains produced by five families, and then they compared and selected for the good one which would be developed and grown popular. Which helps the local farmers have the good rice strains in farming and the rice produced with the higher yield and the better quality as well as sold with the higher price. Besides, Mr. Bay Qui has also co-ordinated with Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute in deploying and training the farmers about the seed rice storing measure by fastidious bags for ensuring the germinating capacity of seed rice and preserving the rice seed longer”.

* An unwilling sieve repairer

Mr. Ha Minh Trieu

Mr. Ha Minh Trieu, residing in Truong Phuoc A, Truong Long Tay commune, Chau Thanh A district has studied re-innovating the threshing-reaping machine (GĐLH) for reducing the farmers’ loss. When the machine was just purchased, Mr. Trieu found that it operated not very good with a lots the rice straw attached to the rice grains, so much dust, and the power of its motor was exceeding upon the harvest. After researching days, he widened meshes of the rice grain sieve (gaèn loïc luùa in Vietnamese language) so that the rice grains could pass through the sieve more and easier but without attaching to the rice straw and the dust. Besides, the race of the sieve also advanced for increasing the turning speed so that the dust brought out more, and the rice grains made cleaner, but the loss generated less. Decreasing the turning speed of the bolt and increasing the turning speed of the gear played an very important role, which made the capacity of the machine improved from 2 ha to 3 ha. Moreover, the speed of the shaft bolt increased, and the fan blade repaired so that the rice grains not clogged when the machine is operating.

Thanks to the methodical innovation, the conjugate threshing-reaping machine made by Mr. Trieu helps the loss decreased a lots. Instead of 2% in the former loss rate, it is only 1% currently, with the reaping capacity of 3 ha/day, it helps the farmers save more than 200 kg of rice grains. Besides, the petrol cost also reduced thanks to the increase in the reaping capacity, which not only brings the benefits to his family but also help the farmers harvest the rice timely. At present, he is going on the study of advancing further in the machine for reaping the fallen rice with the best efficiency. Mr. Trieu confided: “I am also a farmer, so I understand and sympathize with who are farming the rice. Each rice grain is our a sweat bead. That is why I thought about the way to reduce the loss of rice upon the operation of the machine. This helps the maximum profit obtained and our farmers be engrossed in working”. In Mr. Trieu locality at present, seeding is carried out at the same time, the labour forces serving in farming become very rare, the price of employing the labourers for reaping is high. So, he intends to purchase one more conjugate threshing-reaping machine and then goes on innovating it for serving the best the farmers’ rice harvest needs in the area.

* Machine-building iron man

Mr. Nguyen Quang Sang

Mr. Tu Sang (Nguyen Van Sang), who is 60 years old, residing in ward 01, Vi Thanh township, always has a strong attachment the fields in the herediatry form. With farming 1.2 ha, he understands and sympathizes with the farmers about the hardness of rice production in generally and drying in specifically. Once upon drying, he found that shovelling the rice into bags was the hard work which took the farmers a lots time and created the uncomfortable effects due to the smoke and dust from the drying oven on them. With the experience in building armour plate doors for many years, Mr. Tu Sang was determined to create the rice shovel after many nights without sleeping for thought, but early it wasn’t very successful as expected. Mr. Tu Sang confided: “At that time, my wife grumbled at this very much because I spent all day on the rice shovel without the attention to my iron door building job any more. One month, and then two months elapsed, and a lots time spent on the machine which was repaired and adjusted many times, and finally, I was successful as expected”. Besides the rice shovel, he has also created the rice rake so that packing post-drying rice carried out quickly and cleanly without spending a lot of effort thanks to rice-winnowing section installed in the machine. Mr. Tu Sang has supplied the market with 24 rice shovels, and 18 rice rakes, especially the drying ovens in the province, Kien Giang and Can Tho city so far. Recently, Mr. Tu Sang has succeeded in creating the first chemical sprayer for rooting out brown backed rice plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) on the fields in Hau Giang. Mr. Tu Sang confided: “Being a hereditary farmer in rice farming, I found that our farmers’ spraying measure hasn’t currently been very effective for rooting out Nilaparvata lugens with the existence of loss. Since then, I carry out the study of chemical spraying method for exterminating Nilaparvata lugens efficiently, and decreasing the costs of chemical with less the effects on the direct sprayers’ health”. On these days, Mr. Tu Sang is going on researching the rice collecting section in the row arranging-reaping machine for minimizing the farmers’ effort upon the harvest. 50 farmers covered themselves with glory on this occasion aren’t still few in comparison with the reality. However, their initiative has shown the creative potential of millions of Vietnamese farmers who are engrossing in the rice fields. The said initiative plays the great role in agricultural production of the province in specifically and the whole country in generally.
