“Xa No channel – The rice road of Hau Giang region”

In the background that Vietnam has become a member of WTO and . . ., the production of agricultural products in generally and rice in specifically must face the common challenges of the world on food safety, guarantee of quality standards, quantity and quality competitiveness . . . The role and position of areas and people that make paddy -rice is much more honoured. Xa No channel – one of the first rice export places in Viet Nam – it is worthy of honour, acknowledgement . . .

“XA NO CHANNEL – THE RICE ROAD OF HAU GIANG REGION”

Xa No channel was dug since 1901 and completed in the end of 1903 with 60m in surface width and 40m in bed width. The dredging costs of Xa No channel was more than 3 million and 680 thousand Francs. This is the first big channel in the south of Hau river which is dug by machines. This construction, connects the waterway from Thailand to Sai Gon, which creates the waterway traffic system serving local and abroad goods transport as well as exporting the rice through Xa No channel route; up to 1906, the rice export capacity was 1,300 tons.

In the years from 1920 to 1930, France focused on exploiting the land and building rice producing plantations. One of the most modern rice-mills at that time was also built here, it helped the rice export in Hau Giang to be initiated.

Nowadays, as the role of national waterway route, Xa No channel is always busy in a new life style. The tide is still in and out day by day, but the life of the inhabitants has been changed.

Xa No cultural park in Vi Thanh township, will have been completed, which is a milestone to the new province, Hau Giang.

Within the scope of the first 2009 Vietnamese National Rice Festival in Hau Giang, the workshop of “Xa No Channel – the rice road of Hau Giang region” will be taken place at the meeting-hall of the provincial People’s Committee on November 30, 2009

The workshop contents include the affirmation of historic value, the workshop on the indispensability of forming Xa No channel as well as the role of Xa No channel in the inhabitants’ agricultural production process in Hau Giang. In which, the factors of: Settlement, irrigation, goods transport, rice storage and export shall be analysed thoroughly.
