Workshop on the Vietnamese rice – Results from discussions

According to Hau Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development– the body responsible for the organization of workshop “The Vietnamese Rice”- up to October 22nd, 2009 about 70% of preparation for the workshop has been done. The workshop is expected to be taken place on December 02nd, 2009 under the framework of the the first Vietnam National Rice Festival in Hau Giang province.

The workshop will be a place to gather organizations and individuals concerning agricultural cultivation, rice producing communities, researching bodies and individual researchers … for sharing information, experience on the Vietnam wet rice cultivation. It is expected that there is about 100 guests from: People’s Committees, Offices and Branches from 17 provinces (13 provinces and cities in Mekong Delta, 4 provinces in Red River Delta and Southeastern plains), institutes, ministry departments, universities, rice researching bodies, rice businesses, individuals and researchers who are experienced in Vietnam irrigation development, wet rice cultivation systems, and rice business, sponsors, banks, Golden Rice enterprises serving agriculture and rural development, representatives of excellent farmers in 17 provinces nationwide.

In the agenda, there are three main discussions at Workshop on the Vietnamese Rice:

1.   Discussion: The Development Process of Rice in Northern Vietnam. Presenter: Dr. Nguyen Van Bo, the head of Vietnam’s Agricultural Science Institute.
2.   Discussion: The Development Process of Rice in the Middle of Vietnam. Presenter: Dr. Hoang Minh Tam, the head of Agricultural Technology Institute of Coastal Middle and South of Vietnam.
3.   Discussion: The Vietnamese Rice – Opportunities and Challenges. Presenter: Dr. Prof. Bui Chi Buu, the head of South Vietnam’s Agricultural Science Institute.

There will be critical discussions of the scientists from Mekong Delta Rice Institute, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Food and Agriculture Organization, enterprises processing and trading rice commodities, and instantaneous discussions on rice issues catching the attention of the media and people in and out the province.

Checking the preparation’s steps, Mr. Tran Thanh Lap, Vice President of Hau Giang Province People’s Committee paid a special attention to the invitees and lecturers. These two groups must concern the same issue and the more highly qualified they are, the better quality the workshop will have. The issues raised by the scientists and the matters discussed at the workshop must be common to farmers. Mr. Tran Thanh Lap asked the province’s Agriculture and Rural Development Department to determine the number of lecturers participating in this workshop. The display and decoration at the workshop must be kept by using real grain and rice. Fresh and raw products of the stands must consist of things typical to Hau Giang such as Cau Duc pine apple, Phu Huu Nam Roi grape fruit, sweet tangerine, That Lat fish and sugarcane.
