* Ready for the seminar of “Viet Nam Rice”
The cross-rice has existed for near 20 years in Viet Nam with the dominant advantages shown and the yield is higher than the purebred rice from 15% to 20%. However, in the Mekong Delta where is considered as the national granary with holding about 50% national export rice output, the farmers haven’t been passionated with the cross-rice yet. The causes, the solutions and the matters concerned of farming the cross-rice, ... are 1 of 3 the main co-reports in the seminar of “Viet Nam Rice” which will be taken place on December 01st, 2009 within the scope of the first Viet Nam Rice Festival.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dong, Director of Hau Giang Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, the contents in the co-report presented by Associate Professor, DSc. Nguyen Tri Hoan, Vice-Director of Crops Research Institute include: The main results of researching the cross-rice which have been tested in many areas nationwide and some neighbour countries; The direction of cross-rice research, selection and creation in the further time; The primary solutions for applying the cross-rice in production efficiently. Also, the matters relating to the adaptive level of cross-rice strains in each region; the mode of farming the cross-rice; the necessary technical elements for managing diseases and pests …. will be discussed. In the study of Associate Professor, DSc Nguyen Tri Hoan, there are some cross-rice strains with good points: e.g. the short growth cycle, about 85-100 days; getting the resistibility against brown backed rice plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens), yellow dwarf, twisted leaves dwarf and rice blast diseases; the rice seeds are 6 mm in length, pure, without with part, aromatic with soft cooked rice; the wide adaptability, having grown all year round, and getting the resistance to alkaline soil. The cross-rice has been grown in Viet Nam since 1991. At present, the cross-rice farming area is more than 600,000 hectares with the average yield of 6-6,3 tons/hectare. Using the cross-rice has helped the rice yield and output as well as the farmers’ income increase through producing cross-rice seeds. The cross-rice has also helped the food security in many provinces in the North and the Central Viet Nam ensured.
