History of rice in the central region and the current rice production situation in the central region and high land
“The unseasonable flood in the Central region occurred when the farmers were steeping rice variety and sowing rice for spring winter crop caused a great damage in agricultural production. At the present farmers does not only “lack” rice varieties but also solve the “problem” of changing long-time variety into short-time variety urgently”.
That is the information we usually see in newspapers in rice season in the Central region and the High Land. In the speech of: History of rice in the Central region and the current rice production made by DSc. Hoang Minh Tam, the Central South Coastal Agricultural Scientific and Technical Institute will focus on introducing varieties which are in conformity with the climate of this land. In comparison with the rice area in the Mekong Delta, the period for the Central region rice to develop in the field is rather long (from the end of November to the end of September yearly), and the productivity of two crops are stable (5 to 6 tons/ha). However, by being always in conditions of low temperature in the beginning of the year and continuous rain for many days or small flood, early flood and storm in the end of the year (unusual), being hot, drought, dry wind in June and July every year, the rice in the Central region must have strong resistance to climate. In the condition of long cold weather, the rice develop its limb bad. Some rice varieties make early reproduction stage to flower with few paddy grains and loss. Being in hot and drought weather, the rice doesn’t grow and addles its root and dies etc. Facing a lot of rain and wind, the rice will be fallen easily and becomes waterlogged causing low productivity and dead loss etc. Therefore, in structuring rice varieties, it is a must to diversify at least 4 to 5 varieties per small area, crops must be spreaded out in suitable period, and the flowering of the rice at the time when there is best weather shall be controlled.
For those characteristics, DSc. Hoang Minh Tam confirms: Purebred rice varieties in the Central South Coastal provinces such as DV 108, DB6, TB-R1, ML48, ML202, DB5, TH41, Mutative KD, ML203, TH6, OMCS96, ML49, Q5, HT1, KD18, Xi23, X21, NX30, BM9855, DH99-81, 13/2. Some prospect rice varieties are in pilot production such as RNT3, 24SS (NDH3), AN13, BM9962, SH2, PC6 etc. Some cross-bred rice varieties such as Nhi Uu 838, B-TE1, Nghi Huong 2308, Nong Uu 69, TH3-3, VL20. Some long-time (medium-time) rice varieties are produced mainly in provinces such as Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai. However, these rice varieties usually face great risk for example in the flood dated from the second to the 8th of September 2009, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces lost thousands of rice hectares due to not to harvest in time while other rice varieties with high productivity were harvested safely.
Some purebred rice varieties in the High Land such as IR64, VND95-20, DV108, ML48, HT1, OMCS2000, IR59606, OM3536, 13/2, Xi23, KD18, Q5, AS996, JASMINE85, TH85, ĐB6, TB-R1. Some cross-bred rice varieties such as Nhi Uu 838, Bac Uu 903, B-TE1, Nhi Uu 838, Nhi Uu 725, PHB71 etc. Some varieties are in pilot production such as VN124, VN121, PC10, BM207.
